The only thing LaRussa may be more passionate about than crusading for Mark McGwire is rescuing stray animals.  LaRussa raises money for ARF. Now he’s gotten McGwire a job as hitting coach of the St. Louis Cardinals.

Which makes me wonder if LaRussa views the big slugger the same way – as a helpless creature who needs a loving home.

Even if it’s a really bad idea for his baseball team.

Is Mark McGwire a Cat?

Just back from the 49ers Wednesday media access.  From all indications, Michael Crabtree will start on Sunday against Houston – this after a 70-plus day contract and zero work in the spring due to injury.

I asked Mike Singletary if he has any concerns about the message that would be sent to the rest of the locker room – you know to the guys who sweated through two-a-days and nutcracker drills – by immediately inserting Crabtree into the starting lineup.

Singletary Thinks Crabtree Can Help Team Win

  The U.S. men’s soccer team qualified for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa in a thrilling game on Saturday night in San Pedro Sula in Honduras.  The fact that no one in the U.S. could see the game — unless they had access to a closed circuit broadcast — is a testament to the backwards world of FIFA, not of US Soccer. (Thank goodness for Twitter – which kept most of us informed virtually in real time on Saturday night).

The U.S. team (unlike FIFA which lets host countries dictate broadcast rights, which led to the stupid blackout) is very much living in the 21st century.  This is the sixth consecutive World Cup berth for the Americans – which means that this generation of U.S. players can’t even remember a time when  U.S. didn’t make it to the world’s biggest and best sporting event.

The World Cup generation: USA qualifies for South Africa

Just got back from a press conference over at Cal for Tierra Rogers.  As an adult, I’m stunned by her composure.

I don’t know how an 18-year old – who has been through what she’s been through in the past 20 months – could sit in front of a bank of cameras and notepads and answer questions calmly and rationally. Sometimes with a shy smile on her face.

Rogers, in case you don’t know, has been hit with double tragedies.
